There are many myths surrounding women’s bodies and sexual activity, particularly claims that regular sex permanently changes the body in dramatic ways.
The reality is considerably more complicated.
A woman’s reproductive and sexual anatomy naturally changes throughout life because of hormones, age, pregnancy, childbirth and other factors. Sexual activity can also temporarily affect some parts of the body.
However, having sex does not mean that a woman’s body simply becomes permanently “loose” or damaged.
Here are 10 things that can change or be noticed.
1. Natural lubrication can increase during arousal
During sexual arousal, blood flow to the genital area increases and the vagina can become lubricated.
The amount of lubrication varies from person to person and can also change depending on hormones, stress, medication and other factors.
2. The vagina temporarily expands during arousal
The vagina is elastic.

During sexual arousal, the vaginal canal changes to accommodate penetration. These changes are part of the normal sexual response and do not mean that the vagina has been permanently stretched.
3. The clitoris becomes more sensitive
The clitoris contains a large concentration of nerve endings and plays an important role in sexual pleasure.
During arousal, increased blood flow causes it to become swollen and more sensitive.
4. The vulva can temporarily change appearance
The external genital area can become fuller or darker during sexual arousal because of increased blood flow.
These changes normally settle after sexual activity.
5. Vaginal pH can temporarily change
Sexual activity can influence vaginal pH.
A healthy vagina normally has an acidic environment, and changes can sometimes be associated with odour or irritation, particularly when infection is involved.
6. Some women experience temporary sensitivity
After sexual activity, the vulva and clitoris may remain sensitive for a period of time.
This varies widely between women.
7. The labia may look different at different stages of life
Labia naturally vary enormously in size, shape, colour and symmetry.
They can also change during puberty, pregnancy, childbirth and menopause. There is no single “correct” appearance.
8. Pregnancy and childbirth can produce more significant changes
Pregnancy and childbirth can affect pelvic-floor muscles and vaginal tissues.
For some women, changes may include a temporary or longer-lasting sensation of vaginal looseness. This is not the same thing as simply having frequent sex.
9. Hormonal changes can affect sexual comfort
Hormonal changes, particularly around menopause, can affect vaginal lubrication, elasticity and comfort during sex.
Some women experience dryness or painful intercourse as a result.
10. Sexual experience can affect confidence and body image
Not every change is physical.
Sexual relationships can affect how someone feels about their body, sexuality and attractiveness. Positive experiences may increase confidence, while negative experiences can sometimes create insecurity.
The most important thing to remember is that women’s bodies are naturally different.
There is no universal standard for what a woman’s vulva, vagina or labia should look like.
Persistent pain, itching, unusual discharge, foul odour, sores, bleeding or pain during sex should be discussed with a healthcare professional rather than being blamed on sexual activity.
