Zambia’s annual inflation falls to 6.2% in August

ZAMBIA’s annual inflation rate declined to 6.2% in August, down from 6.5% in July, the Zambia Statistics Agency said Thursday.

Statistician General Sheila Mudenda said the rate means prices of goods and services increased by 6.2% between August 2025 and August 2026.

Food inflation eased to 6.0% in August from 6.4% in July. Mudenda said the decline was driven by lower prices for cereals including breakfast mealie meal, roller mealie meal, maize grain, local rice and plain household wheat flour, as well as sugar, cooking oil and dried beans.

“On average, prices of food items increased by 6.0% between August 2025 and August 2026,” Mudenda said.

Non-food inflation also slowed to 6.6% from 6.7% in July. The drop was attributed to price movements in fuels and lubricants, including diesel, petrol, paraffin, engine oil and brake fluid, and in the purchase of vehicles.
