The Ushi Chiefs of Mansa District of Luapula Province have commended the government for pegging the maize floor price at K347 per 50 kilograms of maize during the 2026 crop marketing season, announced by the Food Reserve Agency recently.

Speaking when Vice President, Mutale Nalumango, paid a courtesy call on them, Chiefs Mibenge, Kalaba, Kalasalukangaba and Chimese, noted that the recently announced price of K347 per 50 kilograms of maize is competitive and will motivate and empower small scale farmers.

Representing other traditional leaders, Chief Mibenge, however, appealed to the government to increase the tonnage of maize to be bought from farmers in the district.

He explained that farmers need a secure market as the 2025/2026 maize production has significantly increased in the district and Luapula Province as a whole.

“We can inform you that our people have produced a lot of maize. Through you we are asking the FRA to increase the amount of maize that will be bought from farmers so that they don’t remain stranded with maize due to lack of market,” Chief Mibenge said.

The traditional leaders further called for more satellite depots to be operationalised to reduce distances for farmers as they supply maize to the FRA in the current crop marketing season.

Meanwhile, the chiefs have called on the government to consider changing the contractor constructing palaces in Luapula.

The traditional leaders noted that completion of construction of chiefs’ palaces has dragged thereby denying them decent accommodation in line with government’s commitment.

And Vice President, Mutale Nalumango, also noted that the speed for the construction of palaces is slow and assured that government will put in measures to address the matter.

She has further ordered local authorities to utilise the available Earth Moving Machines for improvement of the road network, especially feeder roads in the district.

Mrs Nalumango stated that government is committed to working on roads to support transportation of agricultural goods and ease movement of people in rural areas.

“We don’t want to continue hearing about bad roads. All districts have earth moving machines and they are there for a purpose,” Mrs Nalumango said.

The Vice President also appealed to traditional leaders to be ambassadors of peace during the ongoing election campaigns.
