A joint investigation team comprising defense and security agencies has arrested several suspects in connection with an alleged plan to interfere with Zambia’s electoral system ahead of Thursday’s general election, the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security said Wednesday.

In a statement, Permanent Secretary Dickson Matembo said the arrests followed an intelligence-led operation.

Among those apprehended are former senior government officials alleged to have provided technical services aimed at disrupting the electoral system. Matembo said the three are in lawful custody.

The ministry has also invited Japhen Mwakalombe, Mwila Kakana and Sensho Banda to assist with ongoing investigations. Matembo said the three were found in possession of more than 7.3 million kwacha, whose source and intended purpose have not been established.

“Despite being invited by the State to explain the source of the funds, the three have written through their lawyers indicating that they would only be available after Aug. 14, 2026,” Matembo said.

Investigations also uncovered sensitive military intelligence information on electronic devices seized from the trio, raising concerns over possible unauthorized access to protected information, he said.

Authorities also arrested a 56-year-old Kenyan national, Michael Njuka, who is alleged to have been contracted to engage in cybercrime targeting the state.

Matembo denied allegations that anyone had been abducted in connection with the investigations. He said former Ambassador Martha Lungu and journalist Hannah Katontoka were apprehended to assist with inquiries and have since been released.

As the country goes to the polls Wednesday, defense and security agencies remain on high alert to ensure national peace, security and the rule of law are protected, Matembo said.

“Law enforcement and security agencies will continue to take all necessary lawful measures to safeguard national security and protect critical systems from attempts to undermine the electoral process,” he said.

The ministry urged the public to remain calm, law-abiding and vigilant, and to refrain from activities that may threaten peace and stability before, during and after the elections.

“Any persons found attempting to compromise national security, interfere with critical systems or engage in criminal activities will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” Matembo said.
