Police in Itezhi-Tezhi District have arrested one suspect in connection with the alleged abduction and forced circumcision of a 75-year-old man by suspected members of a traditional Mukanda group.

The incident was reported to Itezhi-Tezhi Police Station on July 24, 2026, by the victim’s 69-year-old wife of Samundengu Village under Chief Chikazamunyama.

According to a press statement issued by Southern Province Commanding Officer, Moono Namalongo, preliminary investigations revealed that the victim had gone into the bush on July 23 to cut poles when he was confronted by an unknown man who accused him of trespassing into a Mukanda circumcision site.

Mr Namalongo said later that evening, a group of about eight men, some of whom were wearing masquerades, allegedly confronted the elderly man and demanded money for allegedly violating the traditional boundaries of the circumcision site.

He explained that after the victim informed the group that he had no money, he was allegedly grabbed by force and taken into the bush where he was subjected to circumcision without his consent using a sharp knife.

“Police have since apprehended a 56-year-old man of Samundengu Village, Chief Chikazamunyama, Itezhi-Tezhi District and placed him in custody in connection with the matter,” Mr Namalongo said.

He added that police officers conducted a follow-up operation between 18:00 hours and 19:30 hours on July 24 and managed to rescue the victim from captivity.

“The victim was issued with a medical report form and referred to hospital for treatment,” he said.

Mr Namalongo said the police have since intensified investigations in a bid to bring all those involved to justice.

“Investigations to identify and apprehend the remaining suspects are ongoing,” Mr Namalongo stated.

He has assured members of the public that the police service remains committed to enforcing the law and ensuring that all persons implicated in the matter are brought before the courts.
