Educationist and Community Development Advocate, Ambrose Mukwese, says the free education has significantly increased access to secondary education by removing financial barriers that previously prevented many learners from attending school.
The Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) reports that Mr Mukwese said the policy, which is now backed by law, has resulted in increased enrolment and improved school attendance, enabling many families to educate their children without the burden of paying school fees.
He observed that before the introduction of free education, many parents struggled to pay school fees each term, with some borrowing money at high interest rates or paying fees using farm produce and livestock.
Mr Mukwese also praised the Government’s School Feeding Programme, saying it has improved learner welfare by providing nutritious meals during the school day.
“The programme has enhanced learner’s concentration in class, reduced absenteeism and encouraged pupils to remain at school for afternoon preparatory lessons conducted from Monday to Thursday, “he said.
Mr Mukwese added that the initiative has also eased the financial burden on households by reducing the cost of providing meals for learners, allowing parents to redirect resources to other essential family needs.
Meanwhile, Nsanjika Day Secondary School has established an irrigation system under its School Production Unit to grow vegetables, winter maize and other crops.
He said the project is expected to complement the Government’s School Feeding Programme by supplying fresh produce while equipping learners with practical agricultural skills and strengthening the school’s food security.
Mr Mukwese further welcomed the construction of a one-by-three classroom block at the school, noting that the additional infrastructure will help reduce classroom congestion, improve the teaching and learning environment, and accommodate the increasing number of learners resulting from the Free Education Policy.
He said the combined education initiatives reflect the Government’s commitment to expanding access to quality education and creating a conducive learning environment for all learners
