Zambia Correctional Service Commission Chairperson, Evaristo Kalonga has urged correctional officers on the Copperbelt to uphold discipline, professionalism and ethical conduct as they conduct their duties.

Mr Kalonga says the officers should uphold moral uprightness in everything they do as integrity remains central to the operations of the Zambia Correctional Service.

Commission Chairperson said this when he addressed Zambia Correctional Service officers drawn from districts across the Copperbelt at Kamfinsa Correctional Facility in Kitwe during the Commission’s three day working visit to the province.

The engagement also saw the Commission promote over 40 officers to various senior ranks.

Mr Kalonga said the visit was intended to appreciate the challenges affecting both officers and inmates because this would enable the Commission to recommend appropriate interventions aimed at improving service delivery.

He urged officers to work towards behavioural change among inmates so that when they are released, they become better people who can positively contribute to society.

Mr Kalonga reminded officers that inmates should never be subjected to inhuman or degrading treatment because the Government remains concerned about their welfare.

He disclosed that inmates have expressed appreciation for the Government’s free education policy because many of their children were now able to attend school despite their parents being in correctional facilities.

Mr Kalonga said the Government has continued providing beds, mattresses, and blankets to correctional facilities, which officers must ensure they are properly looked after.

He assured officers that the Government is also working towards improving their welfare because their well-being is critical to effective service delivery.

Mr Kalonga expressed satisfaction with the condition of correctional facilities on the Copperbelt, particularly the availability of running water, which was among the key items on the Commission’s inspection checklist.

Meanwhile, Assistant Director for Decentralisation in the Management Development Division, Mukobe Lungu, reminded officers of the values that every public officer must live by.

Ms Lungu said the Government is advancing the decentralisation policy because it is aimed at bringing public services closer to the people, which would improve efficiency, accountability, and responsiveness in service delivery.

She encouraged officers to continue upholding the Code of Ethics because the success of decentralisation depends on disciplined and committed public officers who deliver quality services at every level of Government.

Ms Lungu observed that the reforms would strengthen coordination among institutions, which would ultimately improve public service delivery and the welfare of citizens.

Chingola Correctional Facility Officer-in-Charge, Cletus Chibalani thanked the Commission for visiting the Copperbelt stating that the engagement had benefited officers across the province.

Mr Chibalani appreciated Government’s decentralisation efforts, which would improve service delivery and coordination within the Commission.
