The Basic Education Teachers Union of Zambia (BETUZ) has launched the distribution of 90,000 shirts to its teacher members ahead of this year’s World Teachers’ Day celebrations slated for October 5, 2026.

BETUZ General Secretary Henry Sinkala said the initiative is aimed at celebrating teachers while reaffirming unity, solidarity, professional pride and the identity of the union.

Dr Sinkala said this in a speech read on his behalf by BETUZ Deputy General Secretary, Christopher Simukonda during the launch at BETUZ Headquarters in Lusaka.

He described the shirts as more than just clothing, stating they symbolised the collective strength and dignity of teachers across the country.

Dr Sinkala said the decision by BETUZ to procure 90,000 shirts also demonstrates how the union values and recognises the contribution of teachers to national development.

He said teachers are not merely employees within the education system, but are architects of the foundation upon which Zambia’s human capital is built.

Dr Sinkala urged teachers to wear the shirts with pride and purpose as a visible declaration of their commitment to the union and the teaching profession.

He announced that distribution of the shirts to provinces would commence immediately following the launch, paving the way for every BETUZ teacher member across the country to receive a shirt.

“A shirt of unity, a symbol of pride, a statement of solidarity,” Dr Sinkala said.

He reaffirmed the Union’s commitment to advocating for issues affecting teachers, including improved remuneration, promotions and upgrades, professional recognition, continuous professional development, better working conditions and improved welfare.

Dr Sinkala said the union will also continue engaging Government and other stakeholders constructively, firmly and consistently to ensure that the welfare, dignity and professional standing of the Zambian teacher remained a national priority.
