Copper production in the first half of […]

Copper production in the first half of 2026 has increased by a modest 0.45%, rising from 445,176 to approximately 447,181 metric tons, according to official data. This growth, while positive, is, however, according to experts, below expectations set by the industry’s ambitious target of reaching 1 million metric tons in annual output, an objective that was also not achieved last year.

The 1-million-ton mark is a critical step toward the government’s larger vision of producing 3 million metric tons by 2031. Zambia has maintained its 1 million metric tonnes of copper production for 2026 after missing its national goal of producing 1 million metric tonnes of copper, finishing 2025 at approximately 890,345 tonnes.

Zambia produced 890,345 metric tonnes against the 1 million tonne target for 2025, though this still represented an 8% increase from 2024. With now only 0.45% increase in copper production in the first half of 2026, this minimal growth falls short of market expectations and raises questions about the sector’s ability to meet the ambitious annual target of 1 million metric tons, an objective that eluded the industry last year as well.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with the Zambian Business Times – ZBT, Copperbelt University, Dean of the School of Mines and Mineral Sciences, Professor Musango Lungu, noted that the 0.45% increase in copper production for the first half of 2026 is admittedly below expectations, especially given the ambitious 1 million tonne target for this year.

“However, I remain optimistic that the psychological barrier of 1 million tonnes will be broken. Several major projects that are expected to start coming online within the year, backed by investments.” “It’s important to recognize that while the start has been slow, this is only the first half, and the economic environment remains positive. As these new projects ramp up, even if not at full capacity initially, they will contribute to increased output.”

However, However, many of the projects cited are long-term in nature, suggesting that substantial production surges may not materialize immediately. The key question remains: Can Zambia reach the 1 million tonne mark this year?

“I believe so, provided we continue to focus on improving efficiency and leveraging technology, such as AI and automation, which many companies are already adopting. Our targets are not only national goals, but also commitments to investors and shareholders who expect tangible returns.” Stated Proffessor Lungu.

He added that altimately, reaching the 1 million tonne target will require not just higher output, but also a focus on efficiency and sustainability adding that Companies should increasingly be mindful of costs and environmental considerations, aligning with UNDP guidelines for responsible mining. “With these factors in mind, I am confident that Zambia is on the right path.”
