The Department of Agriculture in Chongwe District has completed preparations for the 2026 maize marketing season by establishing 17 satellite depots across the district to facilitate smooth maize purchase from farmers.

Chongwe District Agricultural Coordinator, Jane Kabunda, says the district has set an initial procurement target of 3,800 metric tonnes of Grade A non-GMO white maize.

Speaking in an interview with the media Ms Kabunda said the depots will enable farmers to access convenient selling points and improve the efficiency of the marketing exercise.

She stated that 17 satellite depots are located at Kampekete, Kanakantapa, Lukoshi, Nyabombwe, Kwacha, Mphango, Kapete Koto, Lwiimba, Palabana, Mwalumina, Twikatane, Kasenga, Chilyabale, Njolwe, Shiyala, Chinkuli and Mulalika.

Ms Kabunda  further said the department has recruited and oriented 34 depot clerks who will manage the buying process, while 34 security guards have been deployed to provide security at all the satellite depots.

She added that all operational materials, including weighing scales, empty bags, sieves and twine, have been distributed to the depots to ensure that maize procurement begins without any challenges.

Ms Kabunda urged farmers to deliver clean, dry and Grade A maize that meets the required quality standards to facilitate a smooth buying process.

She reaffirmed the department’s commitment to ensuring a successful and transparent maize marketing season, adding that the district is fully prepared to receive maize from farmers across the district.
