National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity presidential candidate Brian Mundubile has revealed that he and his campaign team have appeared on stage in bulletproof vests after receiving threats during the election campaign.

Speaking on radio on the eve of the general elections, Mundubile said there were moments when his team intercepted armed men who he claimed were on a mission to attack them.

“We’ve been going on stage in bulletproof vests for a reason…. I can’t say much… this is radio but there have been moments we’ve intercepted gunmen wanting to take a shot at us,” Mundubile said.

He did not give further details about the alleged incidents, saying it was not appropriate to discuss specifics on air given the sensitivity of the matter.

Despite the security concerns, Mundubile said the campaign had been worthwhile. He said traveling by road allowed the NRPUP team to meet voters directly and understand issues on the ground in a way that would not have been possible by air.

“We’ve had a good campaign tour…. we’ve gotten to learn a lot canvassing for votes by road – something that couldn’t have been possible by air,” he said.

Mundubile also spoke about his plans for the security sector. He promised that under an NRPUP government led by himself and running mate Makebi Zulu, the Zambia Police Service would be professional and serve all citizens equally.

“It’s a guarantee that the Zambia Police Service under Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu will be professional… we’re here to serve the Zambian people and nothing else,” he said.

The remarks come as Zambia prepares to vote on 13 August for president, members of parliament and councilors. The Electoral Commission of Zambia has confirmed that voting materials have been delivered to all 13,529 polling stations and that security arrangements are in place.

Throughout the campaign period, political parties have accused each other of intimidation and violence. Civil society organizations and observer missions have urged leaders to call for calm and to encourage supporters to respect the law.

Police have said they are on high alert and will respond to any acts of violence or disruption during the election. Citizens have also been urged to report any suspicious activity to authorities.

With polling day hours away, candidates are making final appeals to voters. Mundubile said the NRPUP was focused on national reconciliation, economic recovery and restoring professionalism in public institutions.
