Tensions boiled over in Mazabuka today after supporters of United Party for National Development (UPND) Mazabuka Central aspiring candidate Vincent Lilanda clashed with backers of independent candidate Gary Nkombo, leaving stones scattered across the tarmac and police scrambling to restore order.

A video posted on a local radio station’s social media handle showed armed police officers moving in to maintain peace as debris littered the road.

Speaking after the incident, Nkombo said his supporters and residence were attacked by members of the ruling party. He also accused the Zambia Police of taking too long to respond.

In a statement posted online, Nkombo wrote:
“LIlanda / UPND team again attack my supporters and residence. Citizens have noted delayed action by Zambia Police.

“I call upon the Electoral Commission of Zambia to stop the violence by UPND and let the people’s will prevail.

“The UPND cadres shouldn’t make Zambia unsafe. Keep reporting all attacks and keep vigil.

“If they are popular why resort to violence to extinguish the people’s candle!

“Mazabuka we have come too far! You are unstoppable.”

He ended with a direct question to authorities: “Can ECZ and police manage the UPND cadres before citizens show up to vote?”

There were no immediate reports of casualties. Police and the Electoral Commission of Zambia have not yet commented on the allegations.

The clashes come just hours before election day, raising concerns about security and the conduct of campaigns in Southern Province.
