UNITED Party for National Development candidate Nawa Kanengu has been elected Mayor of Chililabombwe after polling 16,352 votes in Thursday’s election.

Mr. Kanengu takes over from Lucky Sichone after defeating four other candidates.

He pledged to work with residents and the Government to address challenges facing the border town.

“I will be working with the people and the Government to address the problems we have in Chililabombwe,” Mr. Kanengu said.

Independent candidate Nsofwa Kangwa finished second with 13,431 votes. Resolute Party’s Jane Daka polled 9,217 votes, while Independent Lydia Mpepo got 1,234 votes. Socialist Party candidate Wesley Chungu received 746 votes.

A total of 42,120 votes were cast, with 1,140 ballots declared invalid.
