The United Nations has handed over opposition presidential candidate Brian Mundubile and his running mate Makebi Zulu to Zambian law enforcement authorities.

They are currently being questioned at the Law Enforcement Agencies Command Centre near the Civic Centre in Lusaka.

The two leaders, who were the main challengers in the recently concluded general elections, had been sheltering at the UN offices on Alick Nkhata Road following a deadly military raid on Mundubile’s Kabulonga residence.

The raid resulted in the death of former Minister of Transport and Communications, Mutotwe Kafwaya. In the aftermath, President Hakainde Hichilema accused Mundubile of allegedly forming or harbouring a militia with the intent to overthrow the government.

Citing fears for their safety, Mundubile and Zulu sought refuge at the UN premises, where they remained until Wednesday.

Under an agreement brokered between the UN Secretary-General’s representative and President Hichilema, the government pledged that the two would be treated in accordance with the rule of law and due process.

Meanwhile, senior figures from the Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance, including Bishop Trevor Mwamba and former lawmaker George Chisanga, have also been charged with treason in connection with the same matter.
