The Ugandan Government has ordered all bars and alcohol outlets to remain closed until 3:00PM on working days in a new push to curb early morning drinking and boost productivity.

DW Africa reports that the directive was issued by the Ministry of Local Government and takes effect immediately.

Under the measures, the sale and consumption of alcohol will be restricted during morning and early afternoon hours on weekdays.

The Ministry has also imposed an immediate ban on alcohol sales to anyone under 18 years.

“Local authorities and security agencies have been instructed to enforce the rules strictly, with offenders whether individuals or establishments facing sanctions, including possible closure,”the Ministry stated.

Government says the move is aimed at addressing early morning drinking, which officials say has affected work output, school attendance, and public order.

The under-18 ban is part of broader efforts to protect children and reduce alcohol-related harm among youth.

District leaders, police, and local councils have been directed to monitor bars, taverns, and other alcohol outlets to ensure compliance.

Offending establishments risk fines, arrest of proprietors, and possible closure.

The announcement was shared with the hashtag #DWAfricaSocialMedia as government seeks to sensitize the public.
