TWO POLITICAL PARTIES EXPECTED TO NOMINATE CANDIDATES FOR 40 PROPOSED PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION SEATS

Two political parties, the United Party for National Development (UPND) and the National Reconciliation Party Unity and Prosperity(NRPUP), are expected to nominate candidates for the proposed 40 parliamentary seats under the Proportional Representation system.

The proposed seats are intended to promote the representation of women, youths and persons with disabilities in the National Assembly.

Under the proposed allocation, the UPND would receive 24 seats, distributed as follows:

• 12 seats for women
• 9 seats for youths
• 3 seats for persons with disabilities

Meanwhile, NRPUP would receive 16 seats, distributed as follows:

• 8 seats for women
• 6 seats for youths
• 2 seats for persons with disabilities

The proposed allocation would bring the total number of seats reserved under the Proportional Representation system to 40.

Further details regarding the nomination process and implementation of the proposed system are expected to be communicated through the relevant electoral and legislative processes.
