Turkey Rejects Netanyahu’s Justification for Israeli Strikes in Syria
Turkey has rejected the justification offered by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for Tuesday’s airstrikes in Syria, describing the claims as “ridiculous” attempts to legitimize what Ankara called “illegal” attacks on Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The Turkish Presidency’s Directorate of Communications said lasting peace in the region requires Netanyahu to abandon his “aggressive and coercive” policies and respect international law.
Ankara also reaffirmed its commitment to cooperating with the Syrian government “on a legitimate basis” to promote peace, stability and prosperity, stressing that it “will never allow Syria’s stability to be compromised.”
The statement came hours after Netanyahu’s office claimed that Syria was “on the verge of violating” a security agreement with Israel by allowing Turkish forces to be deployed at an airbase near Aleppo.
Israeli fighter jets struck Syria’s Abu al-Duhur military airbase in eastern Idlib early Tuesday, triggering widespread regional and U.S. condemnation.
