Lusaka, 29 August 2026 — Zambia’s political crisis deepened as opposition presidential candidate Brian Mundubile (55) and his running mate Makebi Zulu (45) were formally charged with treason after surrendering to police on 27 August 2026.

This is according to those close to their legal representation.

The pair had sought refuge at the United Nations Mission in Lusaka following the disputed 13 August general elections, before handing themselves over under international pressure for humane treatment and due process.

Police spokesman Godfrey Chilabi confirmed the two are being held at Lusaka Central Police and have access to their lawyers. “They are being interviewed in the presence of counsel,” Chilabi said, though he added that details of the treason allegations remain under investigation.

The charges trace back to a raid on 14 August 2026 at Mundubile’s Kabulonga residence, where former Transport Minister Mutotwe Kafwaya (50) was shot dead.

Several allies, including 68-year-old Bishop Trevor Mwamba, lawyer George Chisanga, and businessman Patrick Mwansa, were arrested and remain detained, to be possibly treason charged too.

International concern has mounted. The European Union, African Union, SADC, the UN Great Lakes Office, the Commonwealth, Human Rights Watch, and billionaire philanthropist Mo Ibrahim have all voiced alarm over Zambia’s fractious poll aftermath and the treatment of opposition leaders.

The treason case now sets the stage for a courtroom battle that could redefine Zambia’s democratic trajectory.
