Mundubile addressing rally in Mwense

MWENSE, LUAPULA PROVINCE, July 10, 2026 – Thousands of people gathered in Mwense and later in Mambilima on Friday as Tonse Pamodzi Alliance leader and NRP-UP presidential candidate Brian Mundubile, accompanied by his running mate Makebi Zulu, continued their campaign tour of Luapula Province ahead of the August 13 General Election.

Supporters packed the two campaign venues, frequently cheering the opposition leaders throughout their addresses as the alliance intensified its campaign in one of Zambia’s key electoral battlegrounds.

Opening the Mwense rally, Tonse Pamodzi Alliance Luapula Province Campaign Manager George Chilumanda welcomed the two leaders, telling supporters that the large turnout demonstrated the province’s political strength.

“As I promised you, I have brought Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu,” Chilumanda said to loud applause from the crowd.

Roads top development agenda

Mundubile addressing rally in Mwense

Addressing the rally, Mundubile thanked residents for what he described as a warm and overwhelming reception.

He pledged that, if elected President, one of his government’s priorities in Luapula Province would be improving the road network, particularly the roads linking Mwense, Nchelenge, Mununga and Mwansabombwe.

The NRP-UP leader said his campaign team had deliberately chosen to travel by road instead of flying so they could experience first-hand the challenges ordinary Zambians face.

“We are not flying. We are using the same roads that you use every day so that we understand the challenges our people are going through,” he told the rally.

Promises to improve free education

Education also featured prominently in Mundubile’s campaign message.

He pledged that an NRP-UP government would retain free education while improving its quality by reducing classroom congestion, providing free school uniforms and supplying learning materials.

Mundubile argued that the current education system had resulted in overcrowded classrooms, affecting the quality of teaching and learning.

He also praised NRP-UP parliamentary candidate for Mwense, David Mabumba, saying the former Education Minister played a key role in expanding access to education during the Patriotic Front administration.

According to Mundubile, Mabumba initiated the reduction of school fees from K2,000 to K200, laying the foundation for the free education policy that was later fully implemented.

He assured supporters that the free education programme would continue under an NRP-UP government but with greater emphasis on quality.

Fertiliser and farming

Turning to agriculture, Mundubile reiterated one of his campaign pledges made in other parts of the country, promising to reform the distribution of farming inputs.

He said his government would end what he described as the sharing of fertiliser among farmers and instead ensure that each eligible farmer receives eight bags of fertiliser.

Makebi criticises government over campaign promises

Speaking at the same rally, running mate Makebi Zulu thanked the people of Mwense for the enthusiastic reception accorded to the campaign team.

Zulu urged voters to assess the ruling UPND government based on the promises it made during the 2021 election campaign.

He cited campaign commitments relating to the cost of mealie meal and other economic issues, arguing that many of those promises had not been fulfilled.

“The power belongs to the people,” Makebi told supporters, urging them to vote for change in the August elections.

Another huge crowd in Mambilima

After the Mwense rally, the campaign team travelled to Mambilima on its way to Mansa, where another large crowd had gathered waiting for the arrival of Mundubile and Makebi.

Supporters welcomed the opposition leaders with songs and chants before the two addressed the gathering.

Mundubile repeated his key campaign pledges on road infrastructure, agriculture, education and economic development, while appealing to voters to support the Tonse Pamodzi Alliance in next month’s elections.

The Luapula campaign forms part of the NRP-UP’s nationwide tour under the Electoral Commission of Zambia’s campaign timetable as political parties intensify their final push ahead of polling day on August 13, 2026.
