DAR ES SALAAM — Tanzanian Vice President Dr Emmanuel John Nchimbi has resigned from office barely a year after being appointed, and has announced he is retiring from active politics.

Dr Nchimbi tendered his resignation on Tuesday. He will officially leave office on September 4 this year.

In his resignation letter, Dr Nchimbi recalled a commitment he made to President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan on August 27, 2025. He said he had promised the President that he would serve Tanzania with all his strength and loyalty. He also told her that if she ever felt the need for a different vice president, he would step aside.

“I have satisfied myself beyond a doubt that the President desires change, so I have decided to fulfil my promise,” Dr Nchimbi stated in the letter.

The resignation comes less than 12 months after Dr Nchimbi assumed the role of vice president. His departure means President Samia will now be required to appoint a new person to the position.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan came to power following the death of the late President John Magufuli while in office. She was later elected president in a vote that was marked by controversy and a heavy crackdown on opposition parties and figures.

With Dr Nchimbi leaving, he will become the third person to hold the office of vice president in Tanzania in less than five years.

No reason beyond the one given in his letter was provided for the resignation. Dr Nchimbi said his decision was based on the understanding he had reached with the President from the beginning of his tenure.

The office of the Vice President in Tanzania is constitutionally the second highest in government. The holder deputizes the President and assumes presidential duties when required.

Dr Nchimbi’s exit sets in motion the process for President Samia to nominate a replacement, who will then be subject to approval procedures as stipulated by Tanzanian law.

The President’s office has not yet announced who will be appointed to succeed Dr Nchimbi.
