THE South African National Defence Force and the Zambia Defence Force are strengthening military healthcare through a student exchange programme for nursing training.

Under the bilateral agreement, two South African Military Health Service members — Lance Cpl. E.T. Mafole and Pte. T.H.S. Kumalo — have been nominated to pursue a three-year Diploma in Nursing at the Defence School of Health Sciences in Lusaka from July 25, 2026, to Dec. 31, 2028. In return, the South African Military Health Service has welcomed three Zambian students: Sgt. C.D. Mischeck of the Zambia Army, Sgt. G. Phiri of the Zambia National Service, and Senior Aircraftman N.L. Shamizinga of the Zambia Defence School of Health Sciences. During a farewell and welcoming ceremony, Director of Nursing Brig. Gen. A.E. Makumbane described the exchange as “a once in a lifetime opportunity” that would shape the students’ careers, broaden cultural understanding and strengthen professional competence. She urged the students to embrace the programme with dedication and to represent their countries with “honour, dignity, and integrity.” Officials said the initiative promotes academic excellence, professional development and cross-cultural learning, while preparing military nurses for international and multinational operations. The exchange reflects what both defence forces called a shared commitment to developing skilled military nurses and fostering lasting professional partnerships.
