The 2026/27 Premier League season is only three matches old, but the opening weeks have already given fans plenty to talk about.

With the first international break of the season now providing a short pause in domestic action, Manchester City and defending champions Arsenal sit level at the top on nine points, while Hull City have emerged as one of the early surprises after collecting seven points from their opening three matches. Chelsea are fourth on six points.

For Arsenal, the early story has been one of consistency and resilience. Mikel Arteta’s side have won all three of their league matches, including a statement 2-1 comeback victory over Chelsea after falling behind inside the opening two minutes.

The champions have also started strongly in Europe, beating Napoli 1-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday, with captain Martin Ødegaard continuing his excellent early-season form by scoring the decisive goal.

That European success, however, comes with a challenge. Arsenal are entering a demanding period in which they must balance Premier League ambitions with Champions League football and domestic cup commitments.

Their next league assignment is particularly interesting.

Arsenal travel to face newly promoted Sunderland on Saturday night, with the match scheduled for an 8pm UK kick-off. Sunderland have responded well after losing their opening game, collecting four points from their next two matches.

Manchester City, meanwhile, have also collected maximum points from their opening three Premier League games.

Under new manager Enzo Maresca, City have made a perfect league start and have also begun their Champions League campaign positively. Erling Haaland remains a major threat, with the Norwegian among the early leaders in the Golden Boot race.

The first major Manchester derby of the campaign is therefore arriving at an intriguing moment.

Manchester United host Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday, and the fixture could provide a clearer indication of whether United can challenge the leading sides or whether City will continue their perfect start.

United have had a mixed beginning under Michael Carrick. A surprise defeat to newly promoted Hull City and a 2-2 draw at Everton have raised questions about their defensive stability, although the 5-2 victory over Ipswich showed the attacking potential within the squad.

Liverpool are another team fans will be watching closely.

The reigning European contenders endured a slower start domestically but have now registered their first league victory, while their 2-1 Champions League win over Atlético Madrid has provided another boost under new manager Andoni Iraola.

Liverpool currently sit on five points after three league matches, meaning they already have ground to make up on Arsenal and City if they want to be involved in the title conversation.

Chelsea’s position is perhaps one of the most fascinating.

Xabi Alonso’s arrival has created considerable excitement, with Chelsea spending heavily during the summer and bringing in 11 high-profile players at a reported combined cost of around £349 million. The Blues started the campaign impressively but suffered their first defeat against Arsenal.

However, Chelsea immediately showed their attacking potential again by destroying Leeds United 6-3 in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

The question for Alonso is whether Chelsea can transform their attacking promise into the consistency required over 38 league matches.

And then there is Hull City.

The newly promoted side have arguably been the surprise package of the opening weeks. Seven points from three matches and three consecutive clean sheets have put Hull in third place, above Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United.

It is far too early to suggest that Hull will challenge for European football, but their start has demonstrated once again why the Premier League remains so difficult to predict.

At the other end of the table, Tottenham Hotspur, Fulham and Coventry City are already facing pressure.

Tottenham have only one point from their first three matches, while Fulham and Coventry are yet to pick up a point.

For Tottenham in particular, the situation will attract attention because Roberto De Zerbi arrived with considerable expectations after a major investment in the squad. Reuters reports that the club’s winless start has already placed pressure on the new manager.

The Golden Boot race is also beginning to take shape.

Haaland, Liverpool’s Alexander Isak and Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes are currently tied on three goals each, while several players are just behind them on two. Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz are among those in that chasing group.

But three matches cannot tell the full story of a Premier League season.

The real tests are still ahead.

Teams will have to cope with injuries, European travel, fixture congestion, suspensions, changes in form and the pressure of playing twice a week.

For Arsenal and City, the challenge will be maintaining their perfect starts.

For Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United, the objective will be closing the early gap.

For clubs such as Hull, Sunderland and Brighton, the priority will be turning promising starts into sustained campaigns.

And for Tottenham, Fulham and Coventry, the pressure to start collecting points will only increase.

The next few weeks could therefore begin separating the early contenders from the teams simply enjoying a good start.

One thing is already clear, though: the 2026/27 Premier League title race is wide open enough to keep fans guessing, and the biggest battles may only just be beginning.
