INSPECTOR General of Police Graphel Musamba has called on former Nkana Member of Parliament Binwel Mpundu to present himself to police for questioning over alleged comments that he was ready to “kill and be killed” in this year’s elections.

In a statement Friday, Musamba said police are investigating statements attributed to Mpundu that, if confirmed, could incite violence and cause public disorder.

“Investigations into the matter are ongoing, and Mr. Mpundu is advised to avail himself to the police to assist with the investigations,” Musamba said.

Musamba also said police recorded incidents of riotous mobs blocking roads in Chawama, parts of Kanyama Compound and the Lusaka Central Business District. He said officers have been deployed to restore order and ensure public safety.

The Inspector General warned local information technology experts allegedly working with foreign nationals on cybersecurity-related and seditious offenses.

“Police will investigate and take appropriate action against any person found to be involved in unlawful activities,” he said.

Musamba further reminded candidates and stakeholders that under Section 73 of the Electoral Process Act No. 35 of 2016, only the Returning Officer has the mandate to announce and declare presidential election results.

He urged candidates to refrain from announcing or disseminating unverified results, saying such actions could cause confusion and disrupt public peace and order.
