The Zambia Police Service has launched investigations into a video circulating on social media showing a man allegedly assaulting a woman, with a child also seen in the footage.

Police say the circumstances surrounding the incident, including where and when it occurred and the relationship between the individuals involved, have not yet been established.

Zambia Police Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi said police have taken note of the video and instituted investigations to establish what happened and identify the people captured in the footage.

Chilabi said the conduct depicted in the video is a matter of serious concern, particularly because it appears to place the woman’s safety and well-being at risk.

Police are now working to establish the identities of the man and woman involved and determine the circumstances that led to the alleged assault.

The circulation of the video on social media has also drawn public attention to the need for members of the public to report suspected cases of violence to law enforcement authorities rather than relying solely on social-media posts.

Police have appealed to anyone with information that could assist in identifying or tracing the individuals involved to report to the nearest police station.

Members of the public can also provide information through the Zambia Police emergency lines 9010 or 9011.

Chilabi said appropriate action would be taken in accordance with the law once investigations establish the facts of the matter.

Police have meanwhile urged members of the public to avoid spreading unverified information about the incident as investigations continue.

The investigation comes as authorities continue to encourage members of the public to report cases of suspected violence and other criminal conduct through established law-enforcement channels.
