“No, I’m Not Available, I’m Done!”: Former Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi Rules Out Political Comeback, Rejects BDP Presidency Speculation and Says It Is Time for a New Generation of Leaders to Take the Party Forward

Former Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi has once again dismissed speculation about a possible return to frontline politics, making it clear that he has no intention of contesting future elections or seeking the leadership of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP).

Masisi’s comments come amid growing discussions within political circles about who could potentially lead the BDP in the future. Some party members and observers have floated his name as a possible option should leadership changes occur, but the former president has consistently maintained that he is not interested in making a political comeback.

According to Masisi, the BDP has enough capable leaders who can guide the party forward without his return. He believes the focus should be on developing new leadership rather than relying on former leaders to return to the political arena.

The former president also pointed to constitutional realities, noting that any return to the presidency would be limited by Botswana’s term-limit provisions. He argued that it would be more beneficial for the country and the party to allow a new leader the opportunity to serve a full mandate rather than creating what he described as a shortened presidency.

Now approaching his mid-60s, Masisi says he is comfortable transitioning into life outside active electoral politics. Rather than returning to campaigning and party contests, he has increasingly focused on regional and continental responsibilities.

Since leaving office following the 2024 general elections, Masisi has remained active in African affairs through election observation missions, diplomatic engagements and development initiatives. His profile on the continent received a further boost in 2026 when he was appointed to the SADC Panel of Elders, a body tasked with supporting conflict prevention, mediation and peaceful resolution efforts across Southern Africa.

His latest remarks appear to leave little room for doubt. While political speculation continues, Masisi insists his focus is now on statesmanship, regional diplomacy and contributing to Africa’s development from outside electoral politics.

The statement has sparked debate among Batswana, with some supporters urging him to reconsider, while others believe his decision creates space for a new generation of leaders to shape the future of the BDP and Botswana politics.
