Presidential candidate in the ended general elections Brian Mundubile and his running mate Makebi Zulu have been thrown in police cells after being formally cautioned on treason charges.

The two senior Tonse-Pamodzi leaders were interrogated for hours at the Law Enforcement Agencies Command Centre near Civic Centre. They were later moved to Lusaka Central Police Station where they remain detained.

Their legal team — Sakwiba Sikota SC, Chifumu Banda SC and Bonaventure Mutale SC — represented them during the process.

The duo had been sheltering at the United Nations offices on Alick Nkhata Road. Earlier today, the UN released them to Zambian police.

The release followed talks between a UN Secretary General’s representative and President Hakainde Hichilema. Under that agreement, the State committed to uphold the rule of law and due process.

The treason allegations stem from the recent military raid on Mundubile’s Kabulonga residence.

During that military led operation, former Transport and Communications Minister Mutotwe Kafwaya was killed.

President Hichilema has accused his main challenger of forming or harbouring a militia to overthrow government.

Two other Tonse-Pamodzi figures, Bishop Trevor Mwamba and former MP George Chisanga, have also been charged with treason in connection with the case.

Police say investigations are ongoing.
