Leading opposition presidential candidate Brian Mundubile has been picked up by police and is currently at Ibex Hill Police Station in Lusaka.

Mundubile, who contested Thursday’s presidential election on the NRP-UP ticket backed by the Tonse Pamodzi Alliance, was taken to the police station on Friday evening.

The circumstances surrounding his detention were not immediately clear at the time of publication.

The development comes less than 48 hours after Zambians voted in the general election and as the country awaits the consolidation and announcement of presidential results by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).

Mundubile had earlier raised concerns over reports of disturbances at some polling stations during the counting of ballots, saying his campaign was engaging the ECZ over the reports.

His detention also comes amid heightened tensions surrounding the post-election counting process and a series of arrests involving members of his campaign and support team.
