LUSAKA CENTRAL PARLIAMENTARY ELECTION PETITIONED

Losing Lusaka Central Parliamentary Candidate Charity Lumpa has petitioned the High Court, seeking the nullification of the election and the holding of fresh polls in the constituency.

Ms. Lumpa alleges that the electoral process was not conducted in accordance with the principles of transparency, impartiality and credibility provided for under the Electoral Process Act.

She alleges that her agents were denied an opportunity to monitor the counting and totaling of votes after the Electoral Commission of Zambia-ECZ- suspended the process on august 14, 2026 and that they were denied access to gen 20a forms in 56 of the 114 polling districts, with results not announced at most polling stations.

Meanwhile, more losing UPND parliamentary candidates have also petitioned the courts, challenging the outcomes of the august 13 parliamentary election.

In Mwenzo constituency, Muchinga province, Musingwa Siame has challenged the election of Luka Simumba, alleging widespread violence, vote buying, intimidation and other electoral malpractices during the campaign and polling period.

In Isoka constituency, also in Muchinga province, Marjorie Nakaponda has challenged the election of Malozo Sichone, who was declared winner with 7,020 votes against Ms. Nakaponda’s 5,110 votes.

In Mambilima constituency, Luapula province, Nasir Kashiba has challenged the election of Jean Chisenga, who polled 8,159 votes against Mr. Kashiba’s 4,142 votes.

Mr. Kashiba alleges that Ms. Chisenga and her supporters used violence, threats and intimidation against voters and electoral officials.

He cites an alleged incident on august 12 in which masked men reportedly stormed Mwense Town Council, where the district electoral officer was stationed.

The petition seeks the nullification of the election result, a declaration that Ms. Chisenga’s election is void, and the holding of a fresh election.
