Luangwa District Commissioner, Luke Chikani has commended Feira Association for People with Disabilities (FAPID) for supplementing Government’s efforts in fostering inclusive development in the area.

Mr Chikani says the association’s commitment to construct a ramp at the District Administration block, to ease mobility of people with disabilities is a welcome move that will benefit the entire district.

He was speaking at his office in Luangwa district when members of FAPID paid a courtesy call on him, to present plans to construct a disability access ramp at the District Administration Office.

Mr Chikani stressed that many people with disabilities in the district have struggled to access key public institutions due to lack of ramps and other disability friendly infrastructure.

He emphasised that the proposed ramp by FAPID at the administration office is expected to benefit hundreds of people with disabilities who visit the office to access various government services.

“I want to sincerely commend FAPID for this noble gesture that borders on inclusivity,” he said.

 Mr Chikani further appealed to NGOs, the private sector and other cooperating partners to emulate FAPID’s example.

And FAPID Chairperson, Steven Tembo, said the Association chose the District Administration Office because it is a central point where all citizens, including persons with disabilities, go to seek services.

“We identified the District Administration Office as one of the most important offices where the ramp should be constructed because this is where people come to seek most services, and no one should struggle to enter their own government office,” Mr Tembo said.

Meanwhile, FAPID Coordinator, Pharoh Chingaila said the ramp will restore dignity and independence to people with disabilities.

Mr Chingaila explained that once this ramp is in place, people with disabilities will no longer have to depend on being carried by other people or wait outside for help.

He added that FAPID remains committed to advocating for equal access across the district, saying the construction of the ramp is expected to be done before the end of 2026.
