Jonas Shakafuswa’s myopic and regional thinking!
Any Zambian who believes in the One Zambia One Nation motto upon which founding president Dr Kenneth Kaunda governed this nation should denounce Jonas Shakafuswa’s very myopic and regionally inclined thinking.
The former deputy Finance minister and ex-Katuba member of parliament posted on his Facebook page that the most aggrieved from the outcome of the 2026 general elections were those from the northern region as the election offered them the best opportunity to return power in the hands of their region.
”The so called election fall out is manifestation of a very polarized Zambia. Let us be honest. The most aggrieved party is the northern region. Not all Zambians. This elections offered them the best opportunity to ‘return power’ in the hands of their region,” stated Shakafuswa. “You will remember a Catholic Priest, Father Lupupa preaching in church that it is better to rig elections than allow a certain tribe be in power? It failed. That tribe got power. That’s when the fight started. Nothing the tribe could do was seen as being right. The tribe also started reacting to maintain ‘law and order’.”
First of all we want to educate Shakafuswa a little bit since he seems to have a clear malnourishment of this country’s history. Zambia since Independence has been ruled by Presidents from Northern, Luapula, Eastern, Southern and Central/Copperbelt rural. And these presidents were all voted for by Zambians from across the country to rule this country. Kaunda won because he was voted for my Zambians, and so did Frederick Chiluba, Levy Mwanawasa, Rupiah Banda, Michael Sata, Edgar Lungu and Hakainde Hichilema.
But why Shakafuswa decided to pick on a whole region, only he and those with a myopic, narrow or regional perspective on national matters can explain.
And so without any provocation, Shakafuswa has decided to go against a whole region of this country. While he is entitled to feel the way he feels about any issue or people’s, Shakafuswa doesn’t have the right to start preaching such wicked regionalism to others, where he picks on a whole region.
And anyone who loves the unitary state of this country must not condone such blatant regionalism. Because how different is what Shakafuswa has done compared to the tribal remarks for which former Information minister Chishimba Kambwili was charged and imprisoned? The same penalty Kambwili paid should actually be meted on Shakafuswa, because if not, we shall just be allowing double standards and encouraging more of such sick regional talk as a country.
While we have regionalists and tribalists in all the regions of the country, including the same northern regions Shakafuswa is referring to, it’s unfair to brand a whole population of Luapula, Northern and Muchinga province as having been pained with President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND’s electoral victory.
Has he even taken time to look at how the whole country voted in this 2026 and even the most recent 2021 general elections? Because the same region he is accusing of being pained with President Hichilema’s victory actually gave him significant votes. It would have been a toll order for him to win if he was receiving a serious whitewash in these same regions, in the same manner he was scoring extreme lopsided victories in his strongholds.
There is no province in the country where President Hichilema and the UPND did not win. That’s why today, the UPND can boast of having members of parliament from across the whole 10 provinces that make up this country. In the same northern regions Shakafuswa is referring to, the UPND has parliamentary, mayoral and council representation. Yes, in the same Luapula, Northern and Muchinga provinces.
However, the opposition did not win anywhere at presidential or parliamentary level in Southern, Western and North-Western provinces? According to Shakafuswa’s myopic way of thinking, is it fair to brand the whole population of these regions…https://dailyrevelationzambia.com/jonas-shakafuswas-myopic-and-regional-thinking/
