“GO EARLY. GO TOGETHER. GO IN PEACE” – PRESIDENT HH’S LETTER TO THE NATION

President Hakainde Hichilema has written an open letter to the people of Zambia on the eve of Thursday’s general election, framing the vote as a decision that belongs to citizens rather than to any candidate or party.

In the letter, titled “A Letter to the People of Zambia,” the President said tomorrow’s poll was “not about any one candidate” but about “the people of our great and beautiful country,” and credited Zambians themselves with the changes of the past five years. “A government can open a door. Only a people can walk through it,” he wrote.

He pointed to gains made since 2021, noting that 4.6 million children now receive a school meal, up from 900,000, that the country had recorded its largest-ever harvest with farmers “paid in days,” and that machines at Mulungushi Textiles were running again after two decades of silence. He also acknowledged the hardship of debt restructuring, telling citizens: “We have never forgotten whose sacrifice paid for this recovery. Yours.”

Looking ahead, President Hichilema described a future of new mines, factories and jobs, a steadier kwacha and household budgets that “stretch to the end of the month.” He devoted particular attention to peace, urging Zambians not to let “anyone, from any side” squander it and restating a “zero tolerance” stance on violence.

He closed with an appeal to turn out peacefully: “Go early. Go together. Go in peace. And write the next chapter of Zambia’s story.”
