Former DRC President Joseph Kabila Challenges US Sanctions in Washington Court

Former Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila is taking the United States to court, seeking to have his name removed from the Treasury Department’s blacklist.

Kabila, who led the DRC from 2001 to 2019, filed a lawsuit in a Washington federal court arguing that the sanctions imposed against him in April were based on unsubstantiated allegations.

The U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) blacklisted Kabila, accusing him of providing financial and political support to the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels and the Congo River Alliance (AFC), which control significant territory in eastern Congo.

Kabila strongly rejects the claims, contending that the U.S. government has provided no specific evidence of fund transfers or political incentives to the rebels.

The legal challenge comes amid ongoing tensions in eastern Congo, where Kabila was previously sentenced to death in absentia by a Congolese military court on treason and related charges linked to the same rebel groups.
