A fire at Buseko Market in Matero destroyed property belonging to several traders late Aug. 30, 2026, police said.

Police said the fire was first noticed between 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 30. Matero Police Station received a report from members of the public around 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 31.

According to preliminary information from police, the fire started in a shop on the eastern side of the market in an open section where wooden poles and planks are sold. It spread to an adjacent shop and other trading premises.

Preliminary investigations suggest an unattended charcoal brazier may have contributed to the outbreak. Investigations are ongoing to establish the exact cause.

The total value of property destroyed — including planks, merchandise and other goods — has not been established as some traders have not yet reported losses. A detailed assessment will be conducted.

The fire was extinguished by personnel from the Lusaka City Council Fire Brigade, Zambia National Service, Zambia Air Force and TAZAMA.

During the incident, two male suspects, ages 18 and 17, both of Matero, were apprehended on suspicion of theft. Police said the suspects were found removing Bonanza gaming machines from an affected shop. Three gaming machines were recovered.

Personnel from the defense and security wings have been deployed to safeguard the market and prevent theft, vandalism and other criminal activities.

Police urged traders, particularly those using charcoal braziers, to exercise caution and ensure all sources of fire are completely extinguished before leaving premises.

An inquiry file has been opened.
