EROSION OF PUBLIC TRUST IN TRADITIONAL AND RELIGIOUS LEADERSHIP

What we are seeing in Zambia today is what happens when all leadership and governance of the nation are ceded to the politicians.

When traditional, religious, and other leaders of our people surrender all governance and leadership to politicians, their communities lose independent moral oversight, public accountability, and impartial conflict resolution.

When traditional and  spiritual institutions hand over total control or align blindly with politicians and the government, they sacrifice their independent voice. They can no longer guide society with ethical clarity. As noted by The Elephant, “When the Church and its clergy accept monetary contributions from politicians, it compromises them. The Church loses its voice, conscience, and ability to hold politicians and the government accountable.”

Leaders prioritise political favour over truth and justice. Morality is neglected, and communities start resting all hope on flawed political systems at the expense of core values.

This leads to erosion of public trust. Traditional and religious leadership institutions derive their power from serving as neutral, trusted pillars of the community. Total surrender to political actors strips them of this neutrality.  Uncritical alignment with political forces results in the eroding of public trust in traditional and religious institutions.

It also deepens partisan division and communities split into rival political camps based on where their leaders lean. In the end, there’s a loss of respect. Traditional custodians of culture and religious guides lose their timeless dignity when viewed as mere extensions of a political party.

This makes them more vulnerable to manipulation. Politicians often use religious and traditional platforms to gain power without offering genuine partnership in return. Traditional and religious leaders are reduced to tools used during election cycles and discarded afterwards. In the end, we are left with weakened traditional and religious structures that fail to build the theological or cultural defences needed to resist political infiltration.
