The spirit of Nelson Mandela echoed through acts of service, compassion and environmental stewardship as the Basava Social Welfare Foundation (BSWF) commemorated Nelson Mandela International Day with a community programme centred on women’s empowerment and giving back to society. Held in Lusaka on July 17, the event brought together government institutions, civil society organisations, volunteers and community members in a collective effort to honour the values of humanity, equality and service that defined the life of the late South African statesman. The programme, organised in partnership with the High Commission of India to Zambia, the Zambia Police Service Victim Support Unit (VSU), YWCA Zambia and the Lusaka City Council, featured women’s empowerment activities, fruit tree seedling planting, waste collection and environmental conservation initiatives. India’s High Commissioner to Zambia, His Excellency Shri Alok Ranjan Jha, attended as Guest of Honour and called on communities to embrace women’s empowerment, environmental protection and collective responsibility in building a better future. The diplomat emphasised the importance of equality, sustainable development and preserving the environment through initiatives such as tree planting and community action. Meanwhile BSWF Secretary Sri Basava expressed gratitude to all partners, volunteers and community members whose support made the event possible. He praised the collaboration between government institutions, civic organisations and residents in advancing causes that directly benefit vulnerable communities. Attending the same event BSWF Founder and Chairperson Durga Basava reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to improving lives through programmes focused on education, health, environmental conservation and the empowerment of women and young people. He noted that the organisation would continue championing environmental awareness by promoting reforestation, reducing plastic pollution and encouraging cleaner and healthier communities. The event also featured an informative presentation by Zambia Police Service Victim Support Unit National Coordinator Gloria Maimui Mubita, who highlighted the importance of protecting women and vulnerable persons,she urged communities to stand against gender-based violence and raise awareness about the support services available through the Victim Support Unit. In keeping with the tradition of Nelson Mandela International Day, participants dedicated 67 minutes to community service in recognition of Mandela’s 67 years of selfless service to humanity. The tree planting exercise and environmental activities served as a powerful reminder that meaningful change often begins with simple acts of service and collective responsibility. BSWF thanked all partners and volunteers for contributing to the success of the programme and reaffirmed its commitment to continuing initiatives that promote community development, women’s empowerment and environment.
