AU CHIEF CALLS FOR DIALOGUE IN SUDAN WHILE THE WORLD ARMS BOTH SIDES

The African Union’s rotating chairman has called for dialogue and national reconciliation in Sudan. Mohamed Khaled, the Algerian diplomat leading the AU Peace and Security Council, said the only path to lasting peace is through a comprehensive political settlement that meets the aspirations of the Sudanese people.

The Sudanese government says it welcomes the call.

But Sudan has splintered. The army controls nine states. The RSF controls six. Three more are active war zones. Two parallel governments now exist, one in Khartoum and one declared by the RSF in areas it holds.

The AU says it opposes any external interference in Sudan’s internal affairs.

Yet external interference is exactly what is fuelling the war.

The UAE is accused of arming the RSF. A British parliamentary committee heard that the UK was politically captured by its relationship with the UAE and failed to prevent a massacre in El Fasher that killed an estimated 60,000 people. UK-made weapons have reportedly been found with RSF forces.

The United Nations has confirmed widespread sexual violence, with over 3,300 survivors treated in Darfur alone between 2024 and 2025. Nearly all are women and girls. The UN says the actual numbers are much higher.

Easy for diplomats to call for dialogue when they are not being raped and tortured.

Both sides are being armed. Both sides are committing atrocities. Both sides are blocking humanitarian aid. And the international community is still debating.

If the world can find weapons for both sides, why can it not find a way to stop the killing. And if the AU is serious about peace, why is it not naming the countries fuelling the war.
