Arsenal maintained their perfect start to the 2026/27 Premier League season after coming from behind to beat Chelsea 2-1 in a thrilling London derby at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Chelsea stunned the home crowd when Morgan Rogers opened the scoring after just 77 seconds, but Arsenal responded strongly as Kai Havertz equalised before Martin Ødegaard completed the comeback shortly after half-time.

The defeat was Chelsea’s first of the Premier League campaign under new head coach Xabi Alonso, while Arsenal moved to three wins from three league matches and remained alongside Manchester City as the only teams with perfect records at this stage of the season.

Chelsea’s early goal came from a set-piece situation. Reece James delivered the ball into the Arsenal area, Jorrel Hato helped it towards the edge of the box and Rogers reacted first, producing a first-time effort that beat David Raya.

Arsenal’s defence, however, held firm.

Raya was eventually forced into another important late intervention when substitute Estêvão Willian threatened to level the contest, while Chelsea continued to look dangerous as the final whistle approached.

Despite Chelsea’s late pressure, Arsenal held on for a valuable victory that underlined their ability to recover from difficult situations.

For Arteta, the result also provided an early statement about Arsenal’s ambitions to defend their Premier League title.

The Arsenal manager said after the match that his side have the potential to improve further despite already winning the league last season, praising the team’s conviction, quality and response after conceding so early.

Ødegaard was particularly influential, scoring his second goal of the season and producing the decisive moment in another closely contested match.

For Chelsea, the defeat will be a reminder that Alonso’s new-look side still have work to do defensively. The Blues had begun the campaign with three wins, but have now conceded seven goals across their opening three league matches.

The result leaves Arsenal with maximum points after three matches, while Chelsea remain on six points.

The two sides now turn their attention to their next fixtures, with Arsenal continuing their title defence and Chelsea looking to respond immediately after suffering their first setback of the season.
