AFRICA’S LARGEST BANK WARNS THAT STRICTER IMMIGRATION POLICIES COULD HURT SOUTH AFRICA’S ECONOMY, SAYING MIGRANTS ALSO CREATE JOBS, PAY TAXES AND BOOST ECONOMIC GROWTH

The Chief Executive of Standard Bank, Africa’s largest bank by assets, has cautioned that tighter restrictions on migration could have unintended consequences for South Africa’s economy.

According to the bank’s CEO, migrants do not only compete for jobs but also contribute to the economy by paying taxes, spending money, starting businesses and helping create employment opportunities. He argued that migration can support economic growth when it is properly managed.

The warning also referred to the United Kingdom’s experience after Brexit, where tighter immigration policies were followed by labour shortages in several industries and broader economic challenges. The CEO suggested South Africa should carefully consider both the economic benefits and challenges of migration before introducing stricter policies.

The comments come at a time when immigration remains one of South Africa’s most debated issues, with ongoing discussions about border security, employment, public services and the enforcement of immigration laws
